Iโve recently seen an increase in pet owners requesting written prescriptions from their vets so they can purchase their petโs monthly injections elsewhere.
While this is absolutely possible, I know many of you arenโt comfortable giving injections yourselves โ and have been asking whether I can provide this service.
The short answer: Yes, I can.
The slightly longer answer: I will need to have direct communication with your veterinary practice before doing so.

These medications are classified as POM-V (Prescription Only Medicine โ Veterinarian).
Although veterinary nurses may administer these injections within a practice, they do so under the direction of a veterinary surgeon. When Iโm working independently (outside of a veterinary practice), my professional remit is limited by Schedule 3 of the Veterinary Surgeons Act. This means I can only administer prescription medications under the direction of your petโs veterinary surgeon.

With your vetโs consent and direction, I can absolutely administer your petโs prescribed medication.
To make this possible, your vet will simply need to complete a short consent form confirming:
๐Their authorisation for me to administer the medication
๐When theyโd like your pet to return for review or a new prescription
๐That we have open lines of communication between myself and their practice
This ensures your pet continues to receive the best possible care, your vet remains informed, and I stay within my professional boundaries as a registered veterinary nurse.

Absolutely not. These requests are becoming increasingly common, and most practices are very understanding. Your existing relationship with your veterinary team remains exactly the same.

If youโre thinking about requesting a written prescription and buying your petโs medication online to bring to me, please let me know in advance. This allows time for me to liaise with your veterinary practice and ensure all consent and documentation are in place before your petโs next treatment is due.
