Dog Weight Management Clinics
Helping Your Dog Achieve a Healthier Weight
Is your dog carrying a few extra pounds? πΆ
It can be surprisingly difficult to know exactly how much your dog should weigh, how much food they really need, or whether those extra treats are starting to add up.
Our Dog Weight Management Clinics provide friendly, one-to-one support to help you understand your dog's current body condition and work towards a healthier weight.
Led by a Registered Veterinary Nurse, each clinic is tailored to your dog's individual needs, lifestyle and progress.
What Happens During a Weight Management Clinic?
Every dog is different, so we take a personalised approach.
During your initial consultation, we can:
πΎ Weigh your dog and record their starting weight
πΎ Assess their body condition score
πΎ Take measurements to help monitor changes over time
πΎ Discuss their current diet and feeding routine
πΎ Look at treats, chews and extras that may be contributing to their calorie intake
πΎ Discuss their exercise and activity levels
πΎ Set realistic weight-loss goals
πΎ Create a practical plan that fits into your everyday life
πΎ Answer your questions and help you understand what changes may be beneficial
You'll then have the option of returning for regular follow-up clinics so we can monitor progress and adjust the plan as needed.
Who Can Benefit?
Our Weight Management Clinics may be suitable for:
π Dogs who are overweight
π Dogs who have gradually gained weight
π Dogs who are becoming less active
π Dogs who are prone to weight gain
π Dogs needing support after neutering
π Owners who aren't sure whether their dog's weight is ideal
π Owners who have tried weight loss before and need some extra support and accountability
Why Is Maintaining a Healthy Weight Important?
Carrying excess weight can put additional strain on your dog's body and can affect their overall health and quality of life.
Maintaining a healthy body condition can help support:
β Mobility and comfortable movement
β Joint health
β Everyday activity
β General wellbeing
β A healthier lifestyle as your dog gets older
And weight management isn't just about the number on the scales.
What Can Happen If Your Dog Is Overweight?
Carrying excess weight can have a much bigger impact on your dog than simply changing their appearance.
Being overweight can put additional strain on their body and is associated with a range of health problems, including:
𦴠Joint problems and arthritis β extra weight places increased strain on joints and can worsen existing mobility problems.
πΎ Reduced mobility and activity β carrying excess weight can make walking, running, playing and even getting up more difficult.
π« Breathing difficulties β excess weight can affect breathing and can make existing breathing problems worse, particularly in flat-faced breeds.
β€οΈ Reduced exercise tolerance β overweight dogs can tire more easily and may struggle to exercise comfortably.
π‘οΈ Increased risk of overheating and heatstroke β overweight dogs can find it harder to cope in hot weather.
π©Ί Increased risk of certain health conditions β obesity is associated with conditions including diabetes and other metabolic problems.
𦡠Increased risk of injury β excess weight can place additional stress on the musculoskeletal system.
π΄ Reduced quality of life β reduced mobility and difficulty exercising can affect the activities your dog enjoys.
β³ Shorter lifespan β being overweight is associated with a reduced lifespan in dogs.
Our goal is to help your dog achieve and maintain a healthy body condition that is realistic and sustainable. π

Weight loss should be gradual, achievable and tailored to your individual dog.

Important Information
Weight Management Clinics are designed to provide support, education and monitoring for dogs working towards a healthier weight.
They do not replace veterinary diagnosis or treatment.
If your dog has unexplained weight gain or loss, underlying health problems, or you have concerns about their health, a veterinary surgeon should assess them before beginning a weight-loss programme. If your pet is not losing weight by strictly following the plan given, it may also be advised to seek advice from your veterinary practice.
